PHOENIX, AZ. - On January 23, Aliento held the Education Day. Education Day is an event held at the AZ Capitol where students shared with legislators the importance of Instate Tuition for Dreamers. Over 300 students from over 30 schools from across the state came together to share their stories about how the lack of instate tuition affects them and their fellow classmates. Students shed light on the importance of higher education and brought perspective to legislators.
When asked why people should care about instate tuition students shared passionately.
Darian Benitez, an Aliento Fellow and Junior at Brophy College Prep, stated, “Arizona is my home, it’s the only place I know. I want to stay in Arizona to support my younger siblings, attend ASU and give back to my community, I know I’m only one of 2000 AZ dreamers who are only asking for an opportunity to give back.”
Deyanira Garcia, Student Organizer at Aliento, and MCC student states, “We hope that by shedding light on the issue and speaking to our elected officials they realize the true positive impact that instate tuition could have if extended to all Arizona students regardless of immigration status. Our Arizona students, our dreamers and our state will be a better place if we have more people achieving higher education.”
Students are available for interviews upon request.
