DACA Texas Court Hearing

On March 30th, 2021, the Texas Court with Judge Hanen held oral arguments on the future of DACA program.

There was no decision made during the oral arguments; however, this hearing provided the country, organizations, and DACA recipients nationwide a better idea of the direction in which the case is headed. Previously, Judge Hanen barred the Obama administration from carrying out the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans (DAPA) program, a program that would have given work permits and stopped the deportations of parents of U.S. citizens and Legal Permanent Residents if they met certain criteria.

Jose Patiño, Director of Education & External Affairs and DACA recipient - “Dreamers have been waiting 20+ years of certainty, undocumented folks have been waiting for longer. At this point why can't the U.S. Senate just get it done? Honestly, find another political football.”

Reyna Montoya, Founder & CEO and DACA recipient - “Our future as #DACA recipients continue to be a toss up between the courts, congress and the administration. We are human beings, not hot potatoes that can be tossed from one side to the other. Congress has in his hands to end this uncertainty and act.”

Judge Hanen has given both parties until April 9th to submit additional information prior he makes a ruling on the case.

Background on the case:

On September 5th, 2017 the Trump administration rescinded the DACA program saying that the program was unconstitutional.
