What is the Budget Reconciliation?
We've been hearing a lot over the Budget Reconciliation and immigration. Senate Majority Leader Schumer has released the framework for the $3.5 trillion budget bill. Senate Democrats added over $100 Billion for Immigration including legalization for Dreamers, TPS holders, Farmworkers, and essential workers!
But what does that mean? Here we break down the budget bill and how it affects immigration!
What is Budget Reconciliation?
Budget Reconciliation is a legislative process that allows certain budget laws to pass with a simple majority in the Senate. It cannot be filibustered. This makes passing the budget easier.
Right now the Senate is in the process of passing a 3.5 Trillion budget.
This is a process lawmakers can use to pass the budget.
How does it affect immigration?
Senators agreed to allocate over $100 Billion to the Judiciary committee for #immigration.
The Judiciary committee is responsible for adding the bill language for the legalization for #Dreamers, TPS holders, Farmworkers, and essential workers.
What's the timeline?
There are two phases before it passes.
Phase 1 (Aug - Sep)
Introduction and adding amendments (including immigration)
Majority Leader Schumer’s wants all committees to submit their budget bills before September 15, 2021
Phase 2 (Sep - Dec)
Senators submit and debate amendments to the budget. This is where anti-immigrant amendments could be added and voted on.
After the Senate passes the Budget Reconciliation, the House could vote on the bill as is or attempt to amend the bill.
What can we do?
