Aliento Features: Esveidy Rodriguez Melendez
Tell us about yourself.
Hi, I’m Esveidy Rodriguez Melendez, a sophomore at Grand Canyon University, studying a major in Justice Studies with a minor in Spanish. I’m a Dreamer and the first in my family to pursue higher education with a passion for becoming an immigration attorney to support my community. Outside of academics, I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, and advocating for my community.
How did you find out about Aliento?
I first learned about Aliento’s work through Aliento's Instagram, where I discovered Dreamers are not eligible for occupational and professional licenses (OPLs). As an Undocumented aspiring attorney, this news initially felt discouraging but I discovered that Aliento was focused on making Driver Licenses and Occupational Licenses accessible to everyone. This gave me hope and motivated me to get more involved and learn and understand the challenges faced in my community.
Why does the work we are doing matter to you?
While OPLs are undeniably significant for my personal advancement, my genuine concern is ensuring driver’s licenses for all. This issue resonates not just with me but with my family and millions more. Obtaining a driver’s license would alleviate the persistent fear of my parents being deported on their way to work or while driving my citizen siblings to school. The worry of police encounters while driving has always haunted me. That’s why I’m committed to getting involved in making a difference in Arizona, ensuring that everyone has access to DLs regardless of their legal status, and preventing children from worrying about their parents’ safety since we all contribute to our community and deserve access to these opportunities.
What moments from the fellowship are you most proud of?
Participating in the fellowship has brought insight into the challenges confronting my community, many of which I was not aware of. This realization has motivated me to action, prompting me to proactively address these obstacles through legislative advocacy. Additionally, the fellowship has increased my personal growth, enhancing my public speaking skills and confidence in discussing important issues. I had the opportunity to speak on live television, once inconceivable, now evidence of my evolving resilience and determination to make positive changes.
How did Education Day impact you?
I had the privilege of attending Education Day 2024- an enlightening and empowering event that reignited my hope for positive change. I was able to listen to the diverse stories of youth from various schools reaffirming the importance of community advocacy. For the first time, I felt the collective hope and resilience within my community. During the event, I formed a meaningful friendship with two girls, Gisselle and Mirna, whose friendship I deeply cherish.
What is a moment from the fellowship outside of E-day that really impacted you?
Among all the memorable Aliento events I’ve attended, one of my favorites was the first open mic I attended. The supportive environment fostered a sense of comfort as individuals shared their stories and experiences. Despite initial hesitations, I found the courage to share my writing, a practice I had neglected for some time. Though facing the mic filled me with momentary doubt, the safe space encouraged me to persevere. Since then, I’ve reignited my passion for writing and prioritized my mental well-being.
How would you describe this fellowship to someone who is looking to apply?
For those considering applying, I encourage you to take the leap and seize the opportunity. When I applied, I hesitated and doubted my abilities, never imagining I would be selected. However, don’t let fear hold you back. Joining the Aliento team felt like finding another home- a place where I was able to deepen my understanding of issues I’m passionate about, refine my advocacy skills, and connect with supportive individuals who share my commitment to change.
Being part of the Aliento means having a network of allies who stand by you, offering guidance and encouragement through every step. It’s an invaluable experience where you can engage in meaningful discussions, improve your skills, and contribute to the cause that matters to you.
What’s next for you?
As I approach the end of the fellowship, I eagerly anticipate volunteering with Aliento whenever possible and keeping in contact with my amazing cohort fellows. I am currently an officer involved in both the Canyon Dreamers and Spanish Club at GCU, where I hope to apply the skills I’ve acquired during this fellowship. Moving forward, I am committed to remaining engaged in advocacy efforts within my community, continuously striving to make a positive impact.
