Aliento Features: Hidalty Gonzalez

Introduce yourself.

Hello, my name is Hidalty Gonzalez. I am currently a recent graduate from Mountain View high school. I’m from Guatemala and grew up in Mesa, Arizona. I will be attending Grand Canyon University.

How did you find out about Aliento? Why did you get involved?

I was introduced to Aliento in the beginning of my sophomore year of high school. My cousin Angelica Pacheco was a fellow for Aliento and decided to bring me along with her to the open mics and art & healing workshops. I started getting involved in this organization because as a young teenager, I wanted to find a safe community to be myself in. Additionally, I have always loved helping others around me.

Why does the work we are doing matter to you? Why is in-state tuition for everyone important?

The work we are doing with Aliento matters to me because the in-state tuition bill affects millions of Dreamers that seek a higher education, just like me. My dream to pursue a higher education has always been a motivation to get involved and do my best. Being able to receive a higher education should be out of reach for everyone, regardless of legal status.

What moments from the fellowship are you most proud of? What is something you learned from the fellowship?

My proudest moment in the 2022 Aliento Fellowship was being able to grow and learn more about my leadership skills. Being able to speak to senators and representatives gave me the opportunity to improve my speaking skills. Apart from this, I also improved on organizing events with the Latino Club. I was able to be the president for this wonderful club at Mountain View and helped me create connections and create a diverse group in a community that doesn’t really give that much attention to Latinos.

What's next for you?

I will continue my post secondary education at Grand Canyon University and plan on studying sports psychology. I am open to any path that includes helping other people.
