Our CEO, Reyna Montoya, along with other members of Aliento were featured in the USA TODAY for DACA’s 10th anniversary. The article “‘I don’t know if I will be deported’: Young immigrants prepare for DACA to end”, highlights the journey of Dreamers through the 10 years of DACA, the current standing of Dreamers, and what the future could look like.
10 years of the DACA
The DACA Program began taking applications in 2012. It was created with the intention to help the people who were brought into the US as children. Since the DACA program was set in motion, over 800,000 dreamers have been approved for DACA. The program has been deemed “unlawful” and over the past few years many have challenged it in court. In July 2021, Judge Hanen ruled against accepting new applications. Over 80,000 new applicants are stuck in limbo. DACA is the temporary solution we need for the younger generation, such as Daniela Chavira (Former Fellow at Aliento).
Current standing of DACA
The next couple of weeks are filled with anticipation, a committee of judges in New Orleans will be ruling whether or not to end DACA. Republicans have stated that if DACA ends, there would be more pressure for immigration reform.
What can you do now?
The future for DACA seems uncertain, but there is hope for Dreamers in Arizona. Prop 308 will be on the AZ Ballot this year, which would allow in-state tuition for Dreamers who've lived at least two years in the state as well as graduated from an Arizona high school. AZ voters can make this happen in the upcoming election on November 8. This would not only bring a glimpse of hope, but it would also benefit over 3,500 students each year.
