Aliento at ASU’s Response to Arizona State University’s Statement on Today’s Events

Tempe, AZ — Today, nearly 1,000 students gathered in peaceful solidarity at Arizona State University, demonstrating the strength and unity of the ASU community. Meanwhile, close to 5,000  supporters have signed our letter urging concrete protections for all students, regardless of immigration status. Arizona State University’s response to the College Republicans United event does not adequately address the concerns of immigrant students or acknowledge the fear and harm that such rhetoric could cause. While free speech is a protected right, speech that incites fear, discrimination, and encourages harassment should not be tolerated. ASU has a responsibility to ensure that all students, regardless of their immigration status, can pursue their education in an environment free from intimidation and harrassment.

We urge on ASU leadership to take immediate action:

  1. Prohibit unauthorized immigration enforcement on campus – Ensure that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials are not authorized to enter any ASU campus without a judicial warrant.

  2. Enforce student club policies – Ensure that all student organizations adhere to the ASU Student Club Handbook guidelines and face consequences if they violate them.

  3. Protect students from targeted harassment – Assure students that they will not be targeted or reported by their peers without facing consequences for harassment and intimidation.

  4. Uphold equal access to education – Guarantee that all students, regardless of immigration status, can fully participate in academic activities without harassment or discrimination, in accordance with the Arizona Board of Regents Code of Conduct.

We urge ASU to continue to build the legacy of its charter of being “a comprehensive public research university, measured not by whom it excludes, but by whom it includes and how they succeed.”  We want to ensure that Arizona State University continues to foster a campus environment where every student feels safe, supported, and ready to achieve their educational goals.
