Phoenix, Arizona – Aliento issued the following statement today on the filing of an amicus brief in [CASE NAME], urging the Supreme Court to stand in support of DACA recipients: 

Our founder and CEO, Reyna Montoya, will be a keynote speaker at 2019 Forbes Under 30 Summit!

Coming from schools all over the valley, the fellows will be working within their schools to ensure sure that all Arizona graduates are eligible for instate tuition regardless of immigration status!

Blanca Sierra & Laura Sierra, two undocumented moms/sisters, graduating together from Arizona State University. Through all the obstacles being thrown at them, from Prop 300 to no access to instate tuition, they still prevailed.

Three years ago, Montoya founded Aliento. In English it means “breath.” Her organization uses art to help heal undocumented youth and families who have been criminalized in America. When she talks about the shooting, she feels it in her body.

Attorney General Mark Brnovich is siding with Trump in his efforts to dissolve DACA claiming that its costing Arizona money without providing any proof.

Governor Ducey was interviewed today at KJZZ around his thoughts on last week’s decision from ABOR to extand 150% tuition rate to all Arizona high school graduates, including undocumented students who graduate from our state high schools.

7 years today, DACA was federally implemented. Although it didn’t provide a path to citizenship, It gave many undocumented youth a chance to work, an opportunity to go to school, and protection of deportation.

This past weekend our Aliento crew of 22 flew out to Alabama for a 3-day weekend learning trip. We visited various locations to get the most out of our experience!

Aliento is presenting (IN) VISIBLE, a gallery showcase of the work produced this last year in Aliento’s Arts and Healing Workshops for DACA/undocumented youth and migrant families. This year’s theme brings migrant voices to light by transforming feelings of anxiety and invisibility into a visible celebration of our resilience and our hope.

Within our Art + Healing workshops this past year, we made use of various art mediums. We used drawing, painting, writing, collage-making, origami letters, and clay sculptures, just to name a few, to help us get in touch with ourselves.

The word “raids” brings many emotions like fear, anxiety, and anguish. In these difficult moments let’s remember that we don’t have to go through things alone.

June 15, 2019 marks the 7th year anniversary of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). Instead of celebration we hold heavy hearts and a bittersweet taste. While current applicants can continue to renew, due to Trump’s decision to rescind the program, we see many young people who are being left undocumented because they were too young to apply.

In August of 2018, we selected 5 individuals from 5 different schools across the valley to be part of the Aliento Fellowship 2018. Each brought with them their own unique experiences and skills!

Over 100+ dreamers, students, educators, & community were at the Arizona Capitol to amply the need for in-state tuition & merit-based scholarships.
